THE WINE
In the glass the 2006 Riesling is a lovely pale gold colour with youthful green tinges. It has lifted aromas of honeysuckle and citrus on the nose. On the palate this wine shows lime characters and a refreshing lingering acidity. This wine can be consumed while young and vibrant, but it will also reward cellaring in the correct conditions for up to 5 years.
THE GRAPE VARIETY
Riesling is a German grape variety renowned for the elegant, aromatic and deeply flavoured wines it produces. It was one of the first white grape varieties to be brought to Australia by European immigrants last century and is now widely planted throughout the country. As in Germany, Riesling in Australia can produce a wide range of wine styles from delicate, crisp dry whites to richly flavoured dessert wines. In areas that experience cool conditions during the growing season, like the King Valley in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, it produces wines of extraordinary depth of flavour and elegance.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The Riesling grapes used to make this wine were grown in the King Valley, 30kms south of Milawa in the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The grapes were harvested in parcels from early March until late April at baumé levels ranging from 10.8° to 12.0°. This wine was bottled with an alcohol of 12.0%, a pH of 3.1, and an acid level of 6.6 g/L.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
This Riesling would be a great match to an ocean trout ravioli served with a soy and coriander broth, or a seared trout fillet served with a kipfler potato salad. Vietnamese style dishes incorporating coriander and chilli would also suit this wine well as the citrus fruit characters in the wine balance the spice in the dish.
This wine is made to be consumed while young and fresh.
